Transistor Radios
The invention of the transistor changed the world in uncounted ways. One of the first major uses was in radios. In the 1950s transistor radios were suddenly everywhere. People marveled at their tiny size and the portable possibilities of these battery-powered gadgets. Suddenly, for better or worse, the sound of portable music was everywhere -- on the beach, in school hallways, on the playground and in ten thousand other places. Sports fans loved it that they could slip a radio into their pocket, plug in an earphone and listen to the game broadcast while sitting in a stadium watching the action on the field.Transistor radios have continued to evolve. They have led to Walkman radios, boom boxes and the huge array of portable sound devices available to consumers today. Collecting old or not-so-old transistor radios is an enjoyable way to connect to the technological history of the past half-century.
