Admiral Transistor Radios

The Admiral Corp. was founded in 1934 by Ross David Siragusa to manufacture radios. Headquartered in Chicago, it became one of the largest and best known of U.S. makers of radios, phonographs, and--later--televisions, and of major appliances such as refrigerators and ranges. By the early 1960s sales approached $300 million annually and the company employed more than 8,000 people, with manufacturing plants in Canada, Mexico, Australia and Italy as well as the U.S. Its stock was one of the "high flyers" of the era. Competition from imports, especially consumer electronic goods from Japan, later began taking deep bites from the profits of Admiral. In 1973 the company was acquired by Rockwell International, which later sold the appliance part of the business to Magic Chef, Inc. Magic Chef was in turn sold to Maytag, and Maytag eventually was acquired by Whirlpool.

Transistor radios made up a relatively small part of the Admiral product line during the boom years, but many of these sets can be found today. As with other Admiral products, they are recognized for their long-lasting quality.
